This is a very special and VERY limited release for NEAT Coffee.
The vast majority of the coffee we drink is of the species Arabica. Within Arabica are hundreds of varieties that lovers of specialty coffee have come to know and enjoy (e.g. Caturra, Bourbon, Typica, etc). However, this beautiful coffee from Pichindé, Valle del Cauca is not just a different variety but a different species entirely. That said, along with Coffeea Canephora (i.e. Robusta), it is a genetic parent to Arabica.
Coffea Eugenoides originates from the Boma Plateau on the border of South Sudan and Ethiopia, just as the rest of the Coffea genus. How exactly the seeds of this plant moved from Africa to South America is somewhat unclear but, as it stands, Julian Holguín of Café Inmaculada is one of the very few producers in the world to grow this coffee at a commercial level.
Café Inmaculada is a coffee farming project outside of Cali, Valle del Cauca and it is a collection of farms that produce a wide range of coffees at varying altitudes with an impressive mix of processing techniques. Finca las Nubes is situated at 2000 masl which makes it the highest of all Inmaculada farms. It is here that Sr. Holguín decided to plant the extraordinarily rare Eugenoides.
Eugenoides is a very low yielding plant with tiny seeds. It has extremely low caffeine content and as caffeine tends to taste bitter to the human palate, the lack therein makes for a densely sweet, low acid coffee. The team at Inmaculada have elected to produce the majority of this coffee via dry or natural processing. The fermentation and drying in-cherry enhances the acidity ever so slightly and makes for a balanced cup.
This coffee ships in a limited addition tin with the coffee packaged inside a foil bag. Note that each unit is 125 grams.
Tasting Notes: green tea, bubblegum, pineapple, fruit leather
